Are you a grower? Have you ever even tried? I know I’ve kept the seeds in the bottom of a satty to throw in the ground and see what happened.
We’re really interested, and so is the Global Cannabis Cultivation Research Consortium (GCCRC).
Back in 2012, the GCCRC did a survey about Domestic Cannabis Cultivation or growing cannabis at home. The small sample surveyed 11 countries with over 6500 anonymous participants, and they were able to find some significant results.
- Most growers come from ‘normal’ rather than ‘deviant’ or criminal backgrounds
- Most growers motivations were for reasons other than selling
- Over the 11 countries, there was a great deal of similarities among small scale growers, from their demographic characteristics to their methods and reasons for growing cannabis.*
Even though this survey didn’t touch Australia, the findings were pivotal in the decision to decriminalise the cultivation of cannabis in the ACT back in 2012. All thanks to the anonymous participation of 6500 home-growers in the Northern Hemisphere.
Now the GCCRC is back with another survey and we need your help
The preliminary finding show while the motivation for growing varies globally, it is almost unanimous across Australia, with
74% of cannabis growers primary reason being for medicinal use.
Across the western developed world, Australia is so far behind in Cannabis reform, with most of our state laws still threatening long-term imprisonment for possession. Yet, only 6% of Aussie Cannabis Cultivators report intent to sell.
It doesn’t add up.
The preliminary findings are encouraging, but we need more data. Australian cannabis users come from all walks of life, and our outdated legislation does not represent our country. Taking action in this small way, like taking part in a short global survey, raises our collective voice to a volume our government can no longer ignore.
In 2012 the voices of 6500 foreigners changed the laws in the ACT. Imagine what might happen when we embed thousands of Australian voices in the results of a global survey. With 36.9% of Australians being lifetime cannabis users*, it’s time to have your voices heard and have the laws and legislation changed around cannabis use and cultivation.
So, have you ever grown a cannabis plant? Maybe in your backyard or your bathtub? Let the GGCRC know and be part of the cannabis revolution. Click here to get involved in the anonymous survey.
