Hey Hempsters!
We’re thrilled to share some great news from our little vortex.
Many of you know that our store founder, Alex, has faced legal challenges in recent years due to cannabis oil found at our former Hemp Store on Hyde St, Bellingen, back in mid-2021.
The trial has been a long journey, even involving a few months in Silverwater Prison for Alex. We eagerly awaited the sentencing date on February 16th, 2024.
So, we’re overjoyed to report that Alex emerged from Coffs Harbour Court on Friday with just a 12-month community correction order. No more time behind bars – our Alex is a free man!
We’re also heartened by the judge’s attitude towards Alex’s circumstances. Judge Michael McHugh described the situation as a “serious case of the sale of coconut oil,” unlike typical cases of commercial drug supply. After reading a stack of character references, including one from Dr. Loraine Fordham describing him “a true hero to the community,” it’s evident that Alex was driven by compassion for the community, and passion for this plant based medicine.
Reflecting on this outcome fills us with optimism for the future of cannabis in this country (which needs to catch up already!). Our passion for hemp and cannabis remains strong, and with your continued support, we’re paving the way for a greener future.
We want to extend our heartfelt thanks to several people. First, Paul Smart, who has represented this and several other cannabis cases with successful outcomes. To Alex’s family and friends for their unwavering support throughout the trial. All the staff at the Hemp Store, past and present – you have kept this ship afloat. Last but not least, to our wonderful customers who continue to support the Hemp Store and the work we do.
With love and gratitude,
The Hemp Store Team
